DOCUMENTARY WORK

FLORES ALADASSan Marcos, TX 2024
Inducted into the Austin History Center Archive
In March of 2024, I began a project rooted in the study of the human body post mortem, to explore the spaces where decay and life intersect.

It was never just about photographing the process of human decay, but about seeing through the eyes of those who work with it daily: forensic scientists, whose passion and dedication uncover truths about life and death.

Often misunderstood by outsiders, these individuals possess a unique, almost spiritual appreciation for life, a tenderness found even amidst the sights and smells of human decomposition.

I began to see beauty where others might repulse. The nutrients carried by the human body, once alive, return to the soil with purpose. In the earth where a body rested, the imprint remains, a shape etched in the ground, fragile yet lasting. Grass burns away from the richness of these nutrients, creating a human silhouette. Yet, from this seeming desolation, life emerges, vivid flowers, blooming full and bright.

It felt as though the soil itself was offering a quiet, wordless thank-you. A thank-you to those who selflessly donated their bodies, beyond gender, ideology, or identity. Here, in the soil, all are equal. The ground remembers them, and in return, life flourishes. Even in decay, there is generosity, beauty, and rebirth
