SILVER HALIDE
April 2024 St . Edwards University Senior Photography Thesis Exhibitio
.
Four years of freedom to experiment in a discipline is a blessing for many, myself included. This time has allowed me to deepen my approach and practice to image making. For my thesis exhibition, I wanted to create a space that honors the process, the medium, and the presence of the material itself. In particular, the silver halide crystals which are suspended in the film negative and the silver gelatin paper. These crystals are the soul of the photographic process. They hold moments in time, capturing light and transforming it into something tangible, something lasting.
The pieces were displayed within a self-sustaining scaffolding structure, at first just a stylistic choice due to my interest in industrial architecture and its edification techniques. I found that the structure was closely related to these four years of work. Scaffolding is necessary for a building to sustain itself while being built, these 4 years were my scaffolding.
